Detroit Police Officer Rescues Pit Bull Trapped on Porch in The Frigid Cold

A touching act of kindness took place as a Detroit Police Department officer saved a Pit Bull that had been left tied on a porch in the icy cold.

Officer Eric McCombs is celebrated for his quick and compassionate response when he discovered the shivering dog, left defenseless against the freezing Detroit temperatures.

It’s hard to imagine someone abandoning such a gentle creature in the bitter cold, but unfortunately, stories like this are not uncommon in Detroit. Thankfully, heroes like Officer McCombs are there to bring hope and warmth to these heartbreaking situations.

He was stuck in Minus 20° Windchill

While patrolling in the dead of night, Officer McCombs noticed a Pit Bull left outside, struggling with a tangled chain on a porch. A true dog lover, he acted without hesitation to free the dog from her misery.

“When I got close, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I knew I had to rescue this dog,” Officer McCombs shared with The Dodo.

The windchill that night was a brutal -20 degrees, a temperature no dog should endure.

“I was furious. Someone actually chose to chain her to a porch and leave her out here, underfed and freezing,” McCombs said.

The dog was not only cold but extremely hungry, devouring the treats offered by rescuers. She hadn’t seen food in some time, and her relief at being freed was immediate as she quickly jumped into the police car.

From Cold Streets to Shelter Safety

With frostbite on her ears and a long road ahead, McCombs and his partner brought the dog to Detroit Animal Care and Control. But thoughts of the dog lingered, especially for McCombs, who felt she deserved a better life than a kennel crate.

It wasn’t long before he realized he wanted to give this sweet girl, later named Sweet Pea, a permanent home.

He reached out to Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue, and they quickly shared his story:

“One of our officers couldn’t forget about her. We brought her into our care and took on her medical needs, knowing her hero, Officer McCombs, would be her forever family.”

Already a dog owner, McCombs knew what it meant to take in another pup, but he couldn’t resist Sweet Pea’s charm. “It’s more food, more vet care, but I had to do it,” he said.

When Sweet Pea first arrived home, she was unsure how to be an indoor dog—hesitant to jump on the couch, bed, or even try peanut butter. But she soon settled in and began to enjoy the warmth and comfort of her new life.

A Hero Beyond This Rescue

Sweet Pea isn’t the only dog Officer McCombs has saved. Known for his dedication to rescuing dogs in need, he serves as a beacon of hope for neglected and abandoned animals across Detroit.

“Why not rescue Pit Bulls and serve as a police officer?” McCombs mused—a sentiment many would agree with.

Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue praised Officer McCombs, saying, “We are incredibly grateful to have him on our team. He goes above and beyond to help the voiceless animals that need a hero.”
